Pure oud oil is one of the few fragrance materials where the label, the price and the contents can disagree completely. This guide gives the definitions you need, eight checks to run before you pay, and a side by side comparison of the three Woudya oils by origin and profile. Prices change with bottle size and are kept on each product page, so none are repeated here.
Short answer. Buy an undiluted, single-origin oud oil with one ingredient on the label, from a seller who states the region and the grade and ships with tracking. Start with a 1 ml bottle. If you are new to oud, begin with a legible profile before moving to a darker one.
Definitions You Need Before Buying
Oud (agarwood). The dark, resin-saturated heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees. The resin is what carries the scent; pale wood without resin has almost none.
Oud oil. The oil obtained by distilling that resinous wood. In Arabic it is called dehn al oud, the oil of oud. See what dehn al oud means.
Pure or undiluted oud oil. The distillate and nothing else: no alcohol, no carrier oil, no added fragrance. It pours thick and is worn a micro-drop at a time.
Attar. A fragrance oil worn without alcohol. The word describes a format, so an oud attar may be pure oud oil or a blend in which agarwood is a small fraction. See oud oil vs attar.
Mukhallat. A blend of several materials, often including oud. A legitimate product with its own craft, and a different purchase from a pure distillate.
Grade. A letter (A, AA, AAA) that a seller assigns to its own stock. No external body issues grades, so a grade ranks oils inside one house only. See oud oil grades explained.
Origin. The country and region where the wood grew, such as Lombok or Kalimantan in Indonesia. Origin shapes the profile as much as grade does.
Oud chips. Pieces of agarwood heated on a burner or charcoal to release their smoke. They scent a room or fabric; oil is worn on skin. See oud chips vs oud oil.
Eight Criteria to Check Before You Pay
One ingredient on the label. A pure oud oil lists oud oil and nothing else. Any mention of alcohol, a carrier such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, dipropylene glycol, or a fragrance accord means you are looking at a blend or a perfume. This single check settles most listings.
A named origin. Look for a country and a region. A seller who writes only “oud” or “Arabian oud” is describing a style of scent. Woudya states the region for every oil. Origins comes from Lombok. Heritage and Reserve come from Kalimantan.
A grade explained by the seller. Because grades are internal, the useful question is what the letters mean inside that house. A seller should be able to tell you how its grades differ in depth and profile. Treat any grade presented as an official standard with caution.
Small bottles available. A serious oud seller offers small formats, because a customer cannot judge an oil without wearing it. Be wary of a shop that only sells large bottles of “pure oud”. Woudya oils start at 1 ml.
A price per millilitre that matches the material. Distilled agarwood yields very little oil for a large mass of wood. A large bottle of “pure oud” at the price of a mass market perfume cannot be what it claims. Compare prices per millilitre, never per bottle. Our oud oil price guide explains the market tiers.
Behaviour on skin over hours. After purchase, the oil should change as you wear it: the opening differs from the heart, and the heart differs from what remains late in the day. A flat scent that never moves points to a synthetic accord. See real vs fake oud.
Honest answers about analysis. Ask whether the seller holds a GC/MS analysis of the current batch. Woudya does not hold GC/MS analysis on its current stock and says so.
Tracked shipping and clear terms. Oud oil is a small, valuable parcel. Check where it ships from, whether it is tracked, and what the returns policy says about opened bottles. Woudya ships every order tracked from France; the rates are on the shipping page and the conditions on the returns page.
Origins, Heritage and Reserve Compared
Woudya sells three pure oud oils, each from a single origin in Indonesia. All three are undiluted and alcohol-free, sold in 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 ml bottles, and shipped tracked from France. The scent notes below are the ones Woudya lists for each oil.
| Collection | Grade | Origin | Profile | Suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Origins | A | Lombok, Indonesia | Animalic, leathery, dark resin | A first pure oud oil |
| Heritage | AA | Kalimantan, Indonesia | Deep brown, woody-animalic, lasting sillage | A second oil, once the material is familiar |
| Reserve | AAA | Kalimantan Premium | Dark wood, leather, haunting sweetness | The top grade of the range, for collectors |
Read the table in two directions. Across the rows, the grade rises from A to AAA and the profile grows deeper. Down the origin column, one oil comes from Lombok and two come from Kalimantan. Moving from Origins to Heritage therefore changes the island as well as the grade, while moving from Heritage to Reserve stays within Kalimantan.
Current prices for every size are on each product page and on the shop page.
Lombok or Kalimantan for a First Bottle?
Woudya recommends Origins, the Grade A oil from Lombok, as the first bottle. The reason is legibility: a first oud should let you name what you smell, and the Grade A oil gives you the animalic, leathery character of oud in a form you can learn from.
The Kalimantan oils come next. Heritage carries a deeper, woody-animalic body with a long sillage, and Reserve adds dark wood and a haunting sweetness. Both reward someone who already knows how oud develops on skin. The editorial note Lombok or Kalimantan: where to start covers the choice in more detail.

Oil, Chips or Spray
The same material reaches you in three forms, and they answer different uses.
Pure oud oil is worn on skin, a micro-drop at a time.
Oud chips are burned. Woudya sells Kalimantan chips with resinous, warm wood and earthy notes, in sizes from 3 to 50 grams, on the chips page. The method is in how to burn oud chips.
Oud sprays are fragrances in an alcohol base. Woudya's Oud Signature and Oud Interieur are for ambient and textile use. Not intended as a cosmetic product. A spray is not an undiluted oil, and it should never be sold as one. See oud oil vs oud spray.
Where Not to Buy Pure Oud Oil
Four patterns account for most disappointing purchases.
Listings without an ingredient list. If the listing does not say what is in the bottle, assume a blend.
Large bottles at low prices. Ten or thirty millilitres of “pure oud” priced like an ordinary perfume is a blend or a synthetic, whatever the label says.
Oud fragrance oils. “Oud fragrance oil” and “oud perfume oil” usually describe an accord built to evoke oud. They can be pleasant, and they are a different product.
Sellers who cannot answer. Ask where the wood grew, what the grade means in that house, and whether the oil is diluted.

After You Buy: Using and Storing the Bottle
Apply a micro-drop with the glass rod and do not rub, since friction burns the top notes. One millilitre gives dozens of applications. Keep the bottle closed, away from light and heat. The full method is in how to use oud oil, and storage in oud oil storage and shelf life.
Questions Before You Buy
What is the best oud oil for a first purchase? A single-origin, undiluted oud oil in a small bottle, from a seller who names the region and the grade. At Woudya the entry point is Origins, Grade A from Lombok, Indonesia, in a 1 ml bottle, which is enough to learn whether the material suits you.
How can I tell whether an oud oil is pure? Read the ingredient list: a pure oud oil has one ingredient and no alcohol, carrier oil or fragrance accord. Then wear it for several hours. A distilled oil changes on skin, while a synthetic accord smells the same from the first minute to the last.
Who decides the grade of an oud oil? The seller. There is no external body or shared standard behind the letters A, AA and AAA, so a grade compares oils within one house and says nothing reliable about oils from another house.
Is Lombok or Kalimantan oud better for a beginner? At Woudya, Origins from Lombok is the recommended first bottle and the Kalimantan oils come after. Heritage and Reserve are both from Kalimantan and are the deeper, more demanding profiles of the range.
What size of oud oil bottle should I buy first? Start with 1 ml. Pure oud oil is applied a micro-drop at a time, so one millilitre gives dozens of applications. Woudya oils are sold in 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 ml, and the price per millilitre falls as the bottle grows. Current prices are on each product page.
Is an oud spray the same as oud oil? No. Woudya's Oud Signature and Oud Interieur sprays are fragrances in an alcohol base, for ambient and textile use. Not intended as a cosmetic product. The oils are pure and undiluted, with no alcohol.
Woudya sells pure, undiluted oud oil from Lombok and Kalimantan, Indonesia, bottled and shipped tracked from France. Browse the collection or start with Origins, Grade A.
